Reading Blues: A Terzanelle
Mumtaz N Khorakiwala
I wondered how reading fiction would help,
Miss Carmichael glared down her specs
“Oh missy mind you now, do you need a skelp
Dunnae‘ be a vixen.” none in class dared vex.
Yet Little Ralph, the distracted boy, peered out
Miss Carmichael glared down her specs
Now, something crawled and I let out a shout?
And a small sound shattered the solitude
Again, Little Ralph, the distracted boy, peered out.
Several boys sniggered and then mischief brewed
I realised Mark and Ralph had connived.
And a small sound shattered the solitude!
“Your eyes on your books”, Miss Carmichael contrived
To hush the boys, “Not a sound, look into your book!”
But hadn’t Mark and Ralph with the boys connived.
Miss Carmichael glared at Ralph, and Mark shook
His left ear she took, Shhh…not a yelp!
She turned to the boys, “Not a sound, look into your book!”
I wondered how reading fiction would help.
